The Elland Society

Helping ordinands in training in the Northern Province of the Church of England

Home

The Elland Society was founded in 1767, and since 1777 has provided financial support for the training of evangelical ordinands from the Northern Province of the Church of England.

Today we give grants for cases of hardship and towards overseas mission to ordinands sponsored by, or intending to serve their title post in, a Diocese in the Province of York.

Eligibility

If you meet the following criteria, we may be able to help you:

  • Sponsored by, or have secured a title post in, a Northern Diocese of the Church of England (where funds remain at the end of our financial year, i.e. for applications received by the end of February, we consider applications from individuals who do not meet this criterion);

  • With a need related to your official training, which is not provided for in your official church grant (this will tend to fall in the category of specific need, unforeseen expenditure, or overseas mission);

  • Evangelical in conviction and outlook (for example as borne witness to by the Basis of Faith of the Church of England Evangelical Council).

If you are unsure about any of these, please be in touch.

Ordinands at any Theological Education Institute (TEI), whether in the Northern or Southern Province, and whether residential, contextual, or part-time, are eligible to apply.

Application Deadlines

Applications are considered in three rounds each year, with deadlines at the end of November, end of February, and 15 June.

The Society’s Officers can however respond to more urgent need with immediate grants, so please do not hesitate to be in touch as and when your need arises.

To make an application, please use this form, or if you have further enquiries, please see the Contact page.
